As school counselors, we’re always on the lookout for resources that can help us support our students more effectively. But what if I told you that some of the most popular tools in the school counseling world might actually be doing more harm than good? It’s time for honest conversations about the “fat-free cookies” of school counseling and why it’s time to rethink our approach.
Remember the 90s diet culture obsession with “fat-free” everything? We thought we were making healthier choices, but in reality, we were duped into consuming tons more sugar. In the world of school counseling, we have our own version of this misguided trend: “print-and-pray” resources.
These mass-market worksheets and activities might look like quick solutions, but they often lack the substance our students truly need. They’re the equivalent of those fat-free cookies – they might seem helpful on the surface, but they’re not providing the real nourishment our students require.
Let’s look at why these popular printables aren’t as effective as we’re led to believe:
Behavioral psychology tells us that change requires intentional, repeated effort over time. A one-off worksheet simply can’t provide the consistent reinforcement needed to build new skills or change thought patterns.
For students with trauma histories, a simple worksheet isn’t going to address the complex ways trauma affects brain development and emotional regulation. Trauma-informed care requires a more nuanced, relationship-based approach.
Good counseling is all about tailoring interventions to each student’s unique strengths and goals. Mass-produced resources, by definition, can’t offer this level of customization.
You may be thinking, “That makes sense, but I’m so overwhelmed! I don’t have time for anything else!” I hear you, and I promise there are ways to shift your approach without adding to your workload. Here are some strategies to consider:
If you do use printables, make sure they’re part of a larger, intentional strategy. A worksheet alone isn’t a strategy – it should be a tool that supports a well-thought-out counseling approach.
Identify 3-5 high-impact strategies that don’t require any printing. For example:
Instead of searching for new resources for every situation, develop consistent frameworks that you can adapt to various student needs. This approach saves time and allows you to provide more meaningful, evidence-based support.
Remember, what our students need most isn’t another piece of paper – it’s you. Your expertise, your ability to build relationships, and your skill in guiding them through challenges are far more valuable than any printable resource.
By focusing on evidence-based strategies and repeatable frameworks, you can elevate your practice and become a true authority in your field. Imagine being the go-to expert that colleagues and administrators turn to for guidance – that’s the level of impact you can have when you move beyond the “vending machine” approach to school counseling.
If you’re feeling inspired to elevate your school counseling practice, I invite you to join our School for School Counselors Mastermind. We’ve developed playbooks for anxiety, school refusal, behavior intervention, and more – all based on repeatable frameworks that don’t rely on printables.
This is your opportunity to become fluent in your craft, recognize patterns others miss, and provide the kind of support that truly moves the needle for your students.
Are you ready to nourish your students with real, impactful strategies rather than the “fat-free cookies” of school counseling? It’s time to lean into your expertise and create the kind of change that lasts far beyond a single worksheet. Your students – and your professional fulfillment – will thank you for it.
